WFPC SOLAR COLD CHAIN RESEARCH CENTERS
![]() We believe that the most substantial and sustainable way to reduce postharvest food losses in developing countries is to strengthen their cold chain where most food losses occur during food processing, transport, and storage.
Developing and emerging countries have over 1.2 billion people who have no access to energy. Another 3 billion people have access to energy from a power grid with BLACKOUTS. Lack or poor access to an energy grid in the developing world results in Poor or Nonexistent Cold Chains for the processing, transport, and storage of food. Consequently, postharvest food loss and waste in developing countries often exceed 50% of the harvested crop. With world hunger on the rise, we cannot afford these food losses. The World Food Preservation Center® LLC on December 5, 2020 launched the SOLAR COLD CHAIN INITIATIVE to substantially reduce postharvest food losses and waste in developing countries by developing off-grid solar power sources for food preservation. A consortium of three "sister" universities of the World Food Preservation Center® LLC in Ethiopia and two in Ghana are proposing "Solar Cold Chain Research Centers and Training Hubs" in association with their universities. These Centers will perform research on the most advanced solar-powered technology for the postharvest preservation of food. They will also provide an education at their universities in the most advanced solar-powered food preservation technologies to M.S. and Ph.D. students, farmers, food processors, and food storers . |
